How to find hidden photos on Android: every place they can be

Where hidden photos go on Android, from hidden albums and Google Photos’ Archive to locked spaces, .nomedia folders and vault apps, and how to get them back.

Can't find a photo you hid, or one that vanished from your gallery? On Android, a hidden photo can be in a dozen places: a hidden album, Google Photos' Archive or Locked Folder, a separate locked space, a hidden folder or a vault app. Here's where to look, starting with the most likely, and how to bring each photo back. This guide is for finding your own photos.

First, check the trash

A photo that vanished may have been deleted rather than hidden, and trash folders keep deleted photos for a while.

  • Google Photos: tap Collections, then Trash (called Bin in some regions). Google keeps deleted photos there for 30 days.
  • Your phone's gallery: most have their own bin, usually called Recycle bin or Recently deleted, which keeps photos for about 30 days. Look in the gallery's albums list or its menu, or see where each phone keeps its trash.

Hidden albums in your phone's gallery

Most phone galleries can hide a whole album without any password. It's the most common reason photos seem to disappear. Menu names change between software versions, so if a step doesn't match, look for the words "hidden" or "hide" in the gallery's menu or settings.

  • Samsung: in Gallery, open Albums, tap ⋮ and choose Hide albums (on some versions, tap View all first). Turn off the switch next to any album you want back. Our guide to seeing hidden photos on Samsung covers the phone's other hiding places.
  • Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO: in Gallery, tap ⋮, then Settings, then View hidden albums. To unhide one, select it and tap Unhide. More in our Redmi and Xiaomi guide.
  • OPPO, realme and OnePlus: look in the Photos app's albums for a hidden or private section, or in its menu. Newer ColorOS versions can also hide whole albums from the main view.

Hidden albums are still ordinary photos in ordinary folders. A file manager, another gallery app or a computer shows them all.

Google Photos: Archive and Locked Folder

Google Photos has two places that keep photos out of your main photo view:

  • Archive: tap Collections, then Archive. Archived photos only leave the main Photos view. They still show up in albums, search results and your phone's folders. To bring one back, open it, tap More and choose Unarchive.
  • Locked Folder: tap Collections, then Locked, and unlock with your phone's screen lock. Photos here don't appear in your photo grid, search, albums or other apps. To get one out, open it and choose Move. Our guide to Locked Folder vs a vault app covers what it protects, and here's what to do if Locked Folder is empty.

If a photo isn't on this phone at all, sign in to Google Photos on the web with the same account. A photo that was backed up may still be in your cloud library, even after it left the phone. That works both ways, as our guide to copies in Google Photos explains.

Locked spaces built into your phone

Several phone makers offer a separate locked space with its own password. Photos you move into one disappear from the gallery and only show up inside it.

  • Samsung Secure Folder: open it from your apps. If its icon is hidden, open Settings and search for Secure Folder. On Galaxy phones with One UI 8.5, Gallery also has a Private album: tap Menu, then Private album, and unlock with your screen lock or fingerprint.
  • Private Safe (OPPO, realme, OnePlus): open Settings and search for Private Safe, then enter your privacy password (how Private Safe works). Photos you mark Set as private in Photos end up here. On OnePlus phones it replaced Lockbox, as our OnePlus guide explains.
  • File Safe (vivo and iQOO): look in the File Manager app, where it may be called File Safe or Private Safe. Photos hidden in vivo's Albums app are under Hidden photos in its settings, as our vivo guide shows.
  • Xiaomi Private album: in Gallery, open Albums and pull the screen down, then enter your privacy password.
  • Android's Private space: on Android 15 and later, it sits at the bottom of your app list. If it's hidden, type private space in the app list's search bar. Photos taken or saved by apps inside it stay inside it.
  • Files by Google Safe folder: in Files, tap Browse and scroll to Collections, then Safe folder.

If you've forgotten the password for one of these, don't keep guessing or reset the space, since that can delete what's inside. Look for the reset option on its unlock screen, which usually goes through your account.

Hidden folders and .nomedia files

Some apps hide photos the old-fashioned way: they put them in a folder whose name starts with a dot, or add a file called .nomedia to the folder. Android's gallery apps skip any folder with a .nomedia file, so the photos never show up, even though they're still there. Here's how .nomedia files work.

To find them, open a file manager, go to its settings and turn on Show hidden files (on Samsung's My Files it's called Show hidden system files). Then look through your phone's storage for folders with a dot at the start of their name. To make one show up in your gallery again, move the photos into a normal folder such as Pictures. The gallery may take a little while, or a restart, to notice them.

Chat apps are a common case. WhatsApp's Media visibility setting keeps chat photos out of your gallery, but they're still in WhatsApp's own folder, as our WhatsApp guide explains.

Inside a vault app

If you once used a vault app, your photos are inside it, and only it can show them. Look in Settings → Apps for one you've forgotten. Calculator vaults look like an ordinary calculator, so check any calculator you didn't install yourself. Open it, unlock it, and use its unhide or restore option to put photos back in your gallery.

Locked out? See what to do if you forget a vault PIN. If you uninstalled the vault, our guide to what happens after an uninstall explains whether the photos can come back. Be wary of tools that promise to recover photos from any vault: a vault that encrypted its files can't be opened without its key.

If you can find them, so can anyone else

Every place above takes a few taps for whoever holds your unlocked phone. Hidden albums, Archive and dot-folders have no password at all. Locked Folder opens with your screen lock, which the people closest to you often know. The locked spaces are better, but each one only exists on its own brand of phone.

If you're hiding photos rather than looking for them, keep the private ones somewhere that needs its own PIN and encrypts them, so finding the folder isn't enough. Our guide to hiding photos on Android compares every option.

How Hidey keeps photos hidden

Hidey encrypts each photo on your phone, then deletes the original from your gallery. Its files sit in a hidden folder under meaningless names, so a file manager can find the folder but can't open anything in it without your PIN. Its leftover scan looks for files with the same name and size as your hidden photos still sitting in your phone's folders, so you can delete those copies too.

If you hid photos with Hidey and want them back, open Hidey, select them and tap unhide. Each one goes back to the folder it came from, or to Download/Hidey if that folder can't be made again.

Nothing to see here. Keep it that way.

Get Hidey on Google Play. Android 11 and later.
