How to hide WhatsApp photos from your gallery on Android
Stop WhatsApp photos and videos from filling your gallery, for every chat or just one, and keep the private ones out of reach for good.

WhatsApp saves the photos and videos you receive to your phone, and on Android they show up in your gallery for anyone who scrolls through it. You can stop that for every chat or just a few. Here is how to hide WhatsApp photos from your gallery, what the setting doesn't do, and how to keep the private ones private for good.
Hide WhatsApp media from your gallery
WhatsApp calls this setting Media visibility. It's on by default, which is why chat photos appear in your gallery.
For all chats:
- Open WhatsApp, tap the three dots in the top corner, then Settings.
- Tap Chats.
- Turn off Media visibility.
For one chat or group:
- Open the chat and tap the contact's or group's name at the top.
- Tap Media visibility.
- Choose No, then OK.
Menu names can change a little between WhatsApp versions. If you can't find the setting, search WhatsApp's settings for "media".
What Media visibility doesn't do
Turning it off is useful, but it isn't the same as hiding a photo:
- It only affects new media. Photos and videos already in your gallery stay there until you move or delete them.
- The files are still on your phone. WhatsApp keeps them in its own folder (on recent versions, Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media). The setting only stops gallery apps from listing them, and any file manager can still open them, because hidden isn't encrypted.
- The chat still has them. Anyone who opens WhatsApp on your phone can scroll back through the chat and see every photo in it.
Stop photos from saving at all
If you'd rather WhatsApp didn't keep media on your phone unless you ask:
- Turn off auto-download. In Settings → Storage and data → Media auto-download, untick photos, videos and documents for mobile data, Wi-Fi and roaming. Media then downloads only when you tap it.
- View once. Photos and videos sent as view once open a single time and aren't saved to the gallery. The sender chooses this when sending, so it's worth asking for in chats where it matters.
- Disappearing messages. In chats with disappearing messages on, WhatsApp doesn't save new media to your gallery by itself.
Clean up what's already saved
To find photos that are already on your phone, open Settings → Storage and data → Manage storage. It lists media by chat and by size, so you can review it and delete what you don't want to keep. Deleting a message from a chat doesn't always delete its photo from your phone, so it's worth checking here as well.
Keep the private ones private
Media visibility keeps chat photos out of casual view, but they stay ordinary files, and a gallery lock doesn't change that. For photos that need real protection, such as IDs, documents or private pictures, move them into an encrypted vault. In Hidey:
- Tap +, choose Photos and videos, open the folders tab and pick WhatsApp Images. It lists the WhatsApp photos your gallery can see.
- Select the ones to hide. Hidey encrypts each one on your phone, checks the encrypted copy, then deletes the original.
For a photo your gallery doesn't show, open it in WhatsApp and share it to Hidey instead. WhatsApp may keep its own copy then, so delete it from the chat or from Manage storage afterwards. Hidey's leftover scan also finds copies of hidden items that your gallery still lists.
With Pro, auto-hide can watch WhatsApp's image and video folders and move new photos into the vault by itself, without opening Hidey. It catches what WhatsApp saves to your gallery, so leave Media visibility on for the chats you want it to handle.
Hidey can't reach copies outside your phone: the photo is still in the chat on the sender's phone, and in your WhatsApp chat backup if you make one. Our guide to leftover copies covers where else photos linger.
