How to hide videos on Android without losing them

Hide videos from your gallery with your phone’s built-in options or a vault app, and avoid the catches that come with big files, cloud backups and chat copies.

Videos are harder to hide than photos. They're big, so moving them takes time and space. They're often backed up to the cloud before you think about hiding them. And chat apps keep copies of every video you send or receive. Here's how to hide videos from your gallery on Android, with your phone's built-in options or a vault app, and how to make sure none get lost along the way.

What's different about hiding videos

  • Size. A few minutes of video can take hundreds of megabytes, so hiding one means copying a lot of data, and you need free space while it happens.
  • Cloud copies. If Google Photos backs up your videos, a copy is usually in your account soon after you record it, and hiding the video on your phone doesn't touch that copy.
  • Chat apps. Videos from WhatsApp and other chats sit in the app's own folders, often more than once.
  • Playback. A hidden video is only useful if you can still watch it, ideally without the vault leaving an unprotected copy behind.

Quick ways to hide videos from your gallery

Every built-in option that hides photos takes videos too:

  • Google Photos Locked Folder, on any phone with Google Photos: select the video, tap Add to, then Move to Locked Folder. It opens with your screen lock. See Locked Folder vs a vault app.
  • Samsung: hide the album, or move videos to the Private album or Secure Folder. Our Samsung guide compares them.
  • Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO: the Private album, behind your privacy password.
  • vivo and iQOO: File Safe in File Manager.
  • OPPO, realme and OnePlus: Private Safe, with Set as private in Photos.
  • Any phone, for tidying only: a folder with a .nomedia file, which keeps videos out of the gallery but not out of a file manager.

Hiding videos in a vault app

A vault app works the same on every phone and keeps videos behind its own PIN. For videos in particular, check that it:

  1. Plays videos inside the vault, without saving a decrypted copy somewhere first.
  2. Copes with big files, and keeps working if you leave the app while it hides a long video.
  3. Deletes the original only after its copy is complete, so a full phone or a crash doesn't cost you the video.
  4. Backs up somewhere with room for videos. Video backups fill free cloud storage quickly.

How to hide videos without losing them

  • Wait for the hide to finish before you delete anything or turn the phone off.
  • Check your free space. Hiding needs room for the new copy before the original is removed.
  • Delete the cloud copy. If Google Photos already uploaded the video, delete it there too, or stop the backup before you record the next private one.
  • Look for chat copies. WhatsApp keeps its own copy of videos you send and receive, as our WhatsApp guide explains.
  • Keep a backup. A hidden video that lives only on one phone is lost with the phone.

How Hidey handles videos

Hidey hides videos for free, the same way it hides photos: it encrypts each one on your phone, checks the encrypted copy, then deletes the original from your gallery. Long videos keep hiding in the background if you leave Hidey or the screen turns off, and the vault locks on time while it works.

Hidey plays videos inside the vault and lets you skip around in them. It encrypts videos in chunks, so it can stream them without writing a decrypted copy to your phone's storage. If your phone is short on space, you can keep the vault on an SD card instead.

Backups go to a hidden folder in your own Google Drive, encrypted before upload. Videos are big, so keep an eye on your Drive storage, which Google shares with Gmail and Google Photos. The trade-off to know: that backup also lets you reset a forgotten PIN through Google after a 24-hour wait, so whoever controls your Google account could reset it too, unless you turn on zero-knowledge mode (Pro).

To record private videos that never touch your gallery, Hidey's secure camera saves them straight into the vault, up to 5 minutes each and without sound. For hiding documents and other files, see how to hide files and folders.

Nothing to see here. Keep it that way.
