How to delete photos permanently from Android, so they can’t come back

Empty your gallery’s recycle bin, delete Google Photos’ copy, find the copies chat apps keep and handle SD cards, so a deleted photo is really gone.

Deleting a photo on Android rarely deletes it. Your gallery moves it to a trash folder for 30 days, Google Photos keeps its own copy with its own trash, chat apps keep theirs, and a photo deleted from an SD card can sometimes be brought back with recovery software. Here's how to delete a photo for good, everywhere it can be.

1. Empty your gallery's trash

Most gallery apps keep deleted photos for about 30 days, in case you change your mind. To delete them now:

  • Samsung: in Gallery, open the menu and tap Recycle bin, then empty it. On One UI 6 and later you can also open My Files, tap Recycle bin, then ⋮ and Empty, which covers Gallery's deleted photos too. Secure Folder's Gallery has a bin of its own, so empty that one separately.
  • Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO: in Gallery, tap Albums and scroll down to Recently deleted items. Press and hold an item to delete it permanently.
  • Other phones: look for an album called Recently deleted, Trash or Recycle bin in your gallery app.
  • Files by Google: files you delete there go to its own Trash, in the app's menu.

2. Delete it from Google Photos too

If Google Photos backed the photo up, there's a second copy in your Google account. Delete the photo in the Google Photos app, which removes it from your phone and your account, then empty Google Photos' trash: tap Collections, then Trash, then ⋮ and Empty trash.

Don't use Delete from device for this: it removes the phone's copy and keeps the one in your Google account. Our guide to stopping Google Photos backup explains each delete option.

Other clouds work the same way. If your gallery syncs to OneDrive, Xiaomi Cloud or your phone maker's cloud, delete the photo there and empty that trash too. Xiaomi, for example, says backed-up items it deletes can stay in its cloud for up to 60 days.

3. Find the copies you forgot

A photo you took once often exists several times:

  • Chat apps keep their own copies of photos you sent and received.
  • Screenshots and edits are separate files, often in their own folders.
  • Downloads keep anything you saved from a browser or email.

Our guide to copies left behind walks through where each one hides.

4. Be careful with SD cards

Photos on an SD card are deleted the same way, but SD cards are usually not encrypted, so recovery apps can sometimes bring back files deleted from one. If a card has ever held very private photos, format it before you sell or give it away, or simply keep it.

5. Selling or giving away your phone

Modern Android phones encrypt their storage, so a factory reset makes the old data unreadable along with the key that opened it. Before you reset, back up anything you want to keep, including hidden photos, and remove your Google account so the next owner can set the phone up. Our guide to what a reset does to vault apps explains why the backup has to come first.

Can a deleted photo still be recovered?

On a modern phone, a photo deleted from the phone's own storage and emptied from every trash is very hard to bring back, because the storage is encrypted. What recovery apps usually find instead are other copies: a trash folder you didn't empty, a cloud backup, a chat app's folder or a thumbnail. So if you want a photo gone, the steps above matter more than any special tool. If you're looking for photos you deleted by accident, those same places are where to look, as our guide to finding hidden photos explains.

How deleting works in Hidey

When you hide a photo in Hidey, it's encrypted on your phone, the encrypted copy is checked, and then the original is deleted from your gallery. Hidey reminds you the first time that copies Google Photos already backed up stay there until you delete them.

  • Leftover scan. In Settings → Advanced, Find leftover copies looks for files with the same name and size as items in your vault, still sitting in your gallery or folders, and lets you delete them. Edited or resized copies, like the ones chat apps make, won't match, so check those yourself.
  • Recycle bin. Items you delete inside Hidey wait in its recycle bin for 30 days, then they're gone for good.
  • Emptying it now. Open Recycle bin from Hidey's menu, select the items (or tap Select all), then tap delete forever and confirm. Hidey asks for your PIN or fingerprint first, so nobody else can empty it for you.

Nothing to see here. Keep it that way.
