Calculator vault apps: what the disguise hides, and what it can’t
How calculator vault apps disguise themselves on Android, the places they still show up, and what actually keeps your photos private.

Calculator vault apps are a clever idea: an app that looks and works like a calculator until you type a secret code, and then a hidden gallery opens. But a disguise only fools so many places. Here is how they work, and where they still show up.
How the disguise works
On Android, an app sets its own home-screen icon and name, and some apps can switch between several. Calculator vaults use this to appear as a calculator in your app drawer. Open one and it behaves like a calculator. Type the right code, often followed by the equals key, and the vault opens.
What the disguise hides well
A quick look at your home screen or app drawer. Someone scrolling past will see a calculator, and if they open it, they get a working calculator.
Where it still shows up
A disguised app is still an installed app, and Android lists installed apps in several places:
- Settings → Apps lists every installed app under the name its developer gave it. Depending on the app, that may be the vault's real name.
- Google Play shows your installed apps under Manage apps & device, using each app's store listing name.
- Storage settings show how much space each app uses, and a calculator using gigabytes of storage stands out.
- Notifications and the recent apps screen can reveal content if the app isn't careful about what it shows there.
None of this is a flaw in any one app. It is how Android works, and no disguise can change it.
What actually protects your photos
A disguise reduces attention. It doesn't stop someone who knows what to look for. What protects your photos is underneath:
- Encryption: photos should be encrypted, not just moved into a hidden folder.
- A strong PIN: at least six digits, and not the same one you use to unlock your phone.
- Clean screens: the vault should stay out of the recent apps screen and block screenshots.
- Backups you control: so a reset phone or an uninstalled app doesn't mean losing everything.
How Hidey handles it
Hidey's calculator disguise is part of Pro. When it's on, Hidey's icon and name change to Calculator, and the app opens as a working calculator. Type your PIN and press equals to get in. We also tell you plainly that Android's Settings app still lists the app as Hidey.
The disguise sits on top of encryption on your phone, a separate PIN, screenshot blocking and backups to your own Google Drive. The security page explains all of it.
